Series I Topic:  Definition Essay

(What is a definition essay?  It's an essay that defines a concept or thing.  Definition essays are expansive and often subjective, filling in the gaps that a dictionary definition leaves open. It addresses abstract and immense topics such as, "What is Existence?" or "What is a Hero?")

 

Course Objectives: 

• Establish and maintain a formal style in writing.

• Use examples, anecdotes, quotations, or facts to support the thesis.

• Use order of importance or another appropriate organizational structure.

• Use standard English while writing and speaking.

• Use technology to interact and collaborate with others.

• Use technology to produce and publish writing.

• Use transactions to connect ideas.

• Write a definition essay.

• Write a thesis statement that expands the dictionary definition of an object or concept.

• Identify and use the steps in the writing process:  prewriting, writing, and revising.
